Warframe is one of the most popular free-to-play 3rd person shooters on the market, enjoying nearly a decade of content and growth – Warframe even has its own convention!

I helped Blind Squirrel Games and Digital Extremes with the impossible: translate the entire action-heavy game to the mobile screen

My role was UX intensive, producing wire after wire for dozens of bespoke screens – sometimes engineering new systems & techniques to account for the translation to phones and pads.

One of the biggest challenges of the project was, obviously, making the entire game fit and work on a mobile screen

The work as split into two major facets: the HUD and everything else

The HUD required a whole new Vision of how to handle responsive combat on a mobile screen. Other screens required thoughtful innovation, or forward-thinking practicality.

Devils in the Details

 

Warframe also has many, MANY other screens that the HUD that needed to be reconstituted on mobile.

One of the basic strategies was to templatize as much of the system as possible; a universal system on the cheap.

So if you see any overlap… that’s a *great* thing for productivity!
