I’ve always been fascinated by cross-pollinating different genres: stories with art, music with acting, the traditional with the cutting-edge. One of those earlier experiments also lead to one of my favorite personal projects, Lightbearer, a piece of digital art that could best be described as a living painting. Lightbearer was part of a series of paintings lovingly called my Serenities, which were meant to be stared at and help you relax. Some of the concepts and tools used to make this would be used in other projects to speed up effects and animation production. Remember kids: extra curricular work always has regular curricular benefits!
In practical (and oh so reductive) terms, Lightbearer is a piece of fine art that changes color over time. But the angel is in the details: the painting actually has an artificial intelligence working behind the scenes. The painting will randomly select one of four colors to cycle to, and will ensure no two colors repeat. This gives the piece a sense of otherworldly intelligence and makes it infinitely more arresting to stare at. Be sure to visit the site to see the painting (requires Flash)
